How Does the Control System Work in Detail?

The control system acts as the brain of the servo assembly. It receives a signal—usually an electrical pulse width modulation (PWM) or a command signal—that specifies where the shaft should be positioned. This signal is interpreted and converted into a target position.

The feedback device then provides real-time data about the motor’s current position. The control circuit compares this data to the desired position and computes the difference, known as the error. Based on this error, the system generates an appropriate response—either increasing power to the motor or reducing it—to bring the shaft precisely to the intended location.

Pulse Width Modulation (PWM): The Digital Language of Servos

Most servo motors operate using PWM signals—electrical signals that switch between high and low states rapidly, with varying widths. The width of the pulse indicates a specific position:

A longer pulse might command the motor to move to 180 degrees. A shorter pulse might indicate a position closer to 0 degrees.

The control circuitry interprets these pulses and drives the motor accordingly. This encoding allows for fine control even over many repeating cycles, enabling smooth, accurate motion.

Torque and Speed: The Balancing Act

A key feature of servo motors is their ability to generate high torque at low speeds. This balance allows servo motors to hold loads steady, make precise adjustments, or accelerate quickly without sacrificing accuracy. Gearboxes often enhance this capability by multiplying torque, making servo motors suitable for heavy-duty tasks.
